The Humanity of the Papacy & the Priesthood
April 27, 2025
As we await for a new Pope, we reflect on the humanity of popes and priests. In the gospel today, Christ’s divine affirmation of Peter as the first Pope also highlights Peter’s human weakness. Indeed, the darker component of our human nature is not taken away even with the permanent character bestowed by sacramental ordination. Priests remain human, subject to human meanness and frailty. When priests are mistakenly placed on a God-like pedestal, our failures can be seen as God’s failures. They are also subjected to an unbearable burden as they struggle with their own human weaknesses as does every mortal on this earthly pilgrimage.
One area of our being and becoming Church where we all need to work on is our mandate to collaborate, in the various ministries. We have to go out of our ourselves and work together more and more as a community. We cannot continue to live in terms of our own personal or family or organizational domain. We have to reach out in support and solidarity with those who are newer, younger, and weaker in various ways. Church is about becoming more welcoming and caring…
Years in ministry have made me realize more and more that it is imperative to work in unity with others than alone, no matter how capable we may feel. Communion is far more fulfilling than action. I have also realized more and more the importance of having a soul open to the needs of the Universal Church than a soul fixed on particular interests, no matter how important they may seem.
In a letter, the late Bishop Frederick Henry underscores our role as priests in making our communities healthy and alive in our time: “to draw a diverse and sometimes fractious community into the unity of prayer and faith, to preach the Gospel with power and clarity, to live the exemplary life that inspires the people of God, to work with skill and sensitivity with lay-workers in building up the community, to be a source of unity and not division, to publicly represent the mission of the church with integrity…”
Pastoral ministry can be truly empowered with our sense of dependence on God and one another. In his homily on a Holy Thursday, Pope Francis appeals to the faithful: “Dear lay faithful, be close to your priests with affection and with your prayers that they may always be shepherds according to God’s heart!”

Potluck Sunday
The next Potluck Sunday for St. Michael Community will be on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 6pm. This is a free event. Please bring a main dish, bread, salad, pickles, vegetable tray, or dessert ready to serve. Last one is June 1.

45th Annual Hike For Life
Please join Fr. Edmund and Fr. Kelvin in support of the Calgary Pro-Life Association’s 10K Hike For Life at Prince’s Island Park on Saturday, May 8, 2025. You can join the St. Michael’s team, start collecting pledges and hike on your own, or you can make a donation to St. Michael’s Catholic Community (on behalf of Fr. Edmund and Fr. Kelvin) or any other team member from now until June 30th. All donations go directly to Pro-Life to support the Respect For Life programs. St. Michael’s CWL will be collecting pledges on behalf of Fr. Edmund and Fr. Kelvin in the narthex after all Masses on May 3 and 4 or you can donate online at https://www.canadahelps.org/s/6WyRKA
Together in Action (TIA)
Launched this Season of Lent, is the Diocese of Calgary’s annual campaign to support key ministries, partner organizations, and agencies. As Pilgrims of Hope in this Jubilee Year, we give as we “rejoice in hope, patient in suffering, persevering in prayer.” (Romans 12:12) The 2025 Together in Action campaign seeks to raise funds for essential initiatives, including care for retired priests, hospital chaplaincy, pastoral care, diocesan ministries, and the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund. This year’s goal is $121,243 which is the same as the previous few years. Thanks to your generosity, we reached the target amount last year. All surplus funds this year will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
