Law and Spirit
February 15, 2026
Laws are part of our life and history as human beings. Although laws can prove to be a burden or a restriction, they are ordained to serve the common good and to protect the rights of individuals. Traffic laws, for example, are promulgated for the orderly conduct of motorists who can endanger the lives of others if they prove to be reckless and irresponsible.
In the Old Testament, the divine pattern for human conduct was set forth in the Ten Commandments. The commandments were given by God to the people to help them live in the right relationship with God, with others, and with all of creation. In the New Testament, God reveals himself to us in the person of Jesus who has shown us how we are to live. With Christ’s new commandment of love, we freely respond to the call for holiness in the particular circumstances of our lives. By following Christ’s example of self-giving and self-sacrifice, re-enacted in our celebration of the Eucharist, we grow in right relationship with God, with others, and with all of creation. The legacy of Christ’s love enhances our adherence to the rule of law in our lives for we believe that every law ultimately draws its inspiration and authority from God’s spirit.
The gift of God’s love in Christ, as exemplified in the Eucharist, becomes the central force of our acts of justice, kindness, and love. Just evil intentions come from the human heart, goodness comes from the grace of God. God gives us the capacity to act in accordance with God’s love in Jesus Christ who became human so we can share our humanity but not our sinfulness. As St. James asserts: “Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, comes from above, coming down from the father of lights…”
Living the Christian faith is not all about complying with outward practices of our religion. Christian faith has to be deeply rooted in our souls, making the word of God as the source of all our actions and thoughts.
As we come together for this Sunday worship, we renew our faith as we encounter the presence of Christ around God’s table in the Eucharist. As we relish his Eucharistic presence, we carefully examine the faith that we nurture in our hearts. We go beyond our religious practices and acts of justice and peace to realize that it is God’s grace that moves us to pursue what is good. To paraphrase St. James in his letter, may we always welcome the implanted word that has the power to save our souls by becoming doers and not merely hearers of the word.

Healing Lines
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” (Mt 22:34-40) How can we show to all our neighbors how we respect them as we are asked to by God? We all have rights in the eyes of the Lord and all forms of abuse dishonors those rights.

Fr. Kelvin’s Farewell Cake Reception
There will be coffee and cake after all the weekend Masses on February 14 and 15 as we bid farewell to Fr. Kelvin and offer our blessings and good wishes for his new assignment at St. Mary’s Parish in Brooks.
2025 Tax Receipts
The 2025 tax receipts will be available for pick up from February 14 to February 22, 2026. They will be arranged alphabetically on a table in front of the main washrooms. After that date, the remaining tax receipts will be mailed.
Together in Action (TIA)
The Together in Action 2026 campaign begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2026. The theme for this year’s TIA is inspired by the Jubilee Year of St. Francis. “But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.” (James 2:18) This year’s TIA also marks the final year of the financial commitment of the Diocese to the National Indigenous Reconciliation Fund, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives across Southern Alberta. Our target goal this year $121,000, same as last year. We thank God for your generosity! All surplus funds this year will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
Easter Fundraiser 2026
St. Michael Catholic Community raises funds year-round to support initiatives within our Church and in the surrounding communities. With our fundraiser, you may choose from 66 products from a variety of meat, fish, seafood, pasta, and sauces. With your purchases, we can help the less fortunate and those in our parish all while enjoying some delicious food over the Easter season which is right around the corner! Stock up your freezers now. The fundraiser opens February 1 and closes March 15. Orders will be available for pick up on Tuesday, March 24 between 4:00-5:00pm outside the parish doors. Saturday Night Lights
Youths in grades 7-12 are invited to an evening of music, food, friendships, and talks hosted by Access 52. Dates for the evenings are February 14, and April 25. This is a free event. Click here to register.
Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras, marks the start of Lent, evolving into a time of celebrating and feasting, like a final opportunity for indulgence before the period of fasting and penance. It is also a significant liturgical movement towards the spiritual discipline of Lent. It is geared towards building community. The Knights of Columbus is hosting a pancake dinner on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 7:00pm (after the 6pm Mass). Please click here to RSVP by Friday, February 13.

Lenten Retreat / Mission
“Who is the Man of the Shroud?” Fr. Andrew Dalton L.C. reflects on the suffering (1), death (2) and resurrection (3) of Christ in the light of the Shroud of Turin on March 22, 23, and 24, 2026, respectively. Fr Dalton will celebrate Mass before the talks: Sunday, March 22, 5pm, Monday, March 23, 6pm and Tuesday, March 24, 6pm. Reception follows after the 5pm Mass on Sunday before the talk at 7pm, and after the talks on Monday and Tuesday. Details to follow.
Vacation Bible Camp 2026:
“Rainforest Falls – Exploring the Nature of God”
* SMCC 5-day Vacation Bible Camp (VBC) 2026 has limited spots available (50) for all students/minors aged Kindergarten (6yrs.) to Grade 12. $100 fee per student/minor or $200 maximum fee per family (same household only please).
