Ministries & Programs

An altar server’s primary role is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy. By fulfilling their responsibilities during Mass with reverence, they set an example for the rest of the congregation through their full, active, and conscious participation.

The mechanics of serving can be easily taught, but it takes a certain maturity to reverently serve God in the Eucharistic liturgy. If you would like to offer your time to this ministry, please contact Richelle Forest at altarservers@saintmichael.ca

The CWL is an association of lay Catholic women rooted in gospel values, calling its members to holiness through service to the people of God.

Communion Ministers assist in the distribution of Holy Communion, and in ministering to the sick and homebound of our Parish. Through their ministry, they affirm the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist with reverence.

St. Michael’s Gift Shop is a non-profit venture run by volunteers from our parish community, whose mission is to provide parishioners with Catholic materials, gifts, and books. The Grief Support Ministry at St. Michael is based on the Companionship model of grief program initiated by Dr. Alan Wolfelt. It offers support and companionship to the person during the time of loss. The grief support volunteer meets with the griever at his/her request only. The volunteer companion listens; the griever sets the pace. The grief journey includes prayer time together. Ministers of Hospitality have a unique role — the opportunity to serve the parish by fostering a culture of welcome and community.  They are also people of faith who can perceive Jesus’ presence in the gathering community.

The Knitting Ministry meets on Thursdays from 10:00am-12:00pm in the Church Library. If you knit or crotchet, please join us for fellowship as we work on our projects for various charities. No registration needed.

St. Michael’s Men’s Ministry (TMIY) meets on Wednesday mornings during different periods throughout the year.

Music plays a major role in much of our liturgical, sacramental, and community life at St. Michael, and has the ability to lift the heart to God and encourage prayer.

St Michael’s Pastoral Care includes the following ministries:

• Continuing Care Centres:  Mass and Communion Services are celebrated at various times and volunteers are needed to help by celebrating Communion Services and by distributing Communion at Masses. Families, including children, are encouraged to visit the shut-in as their visits bring joy, love, caring, and humor to the residents. They truly delight in your visit!
• Funeral Services and Receptions – Volunteers help at funeral Masses by serving as Altar Servers and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. In addition, volunteers are needed to assist at receptions following funerals.

• Grief Support –The Grief Support Ministry has two components.

1. Companion Model:  This model offers individual grief support, prayer and companionship to the person during time of loss, at his/her request.
2. Grief Share Program: This program is group support through group sharing with facilitators who are volunteers. The program runs 2 times per year. The group meets weekly for 8 weeks. The Grief Share program is Christian based.

• Home Visits –Home visitors complete a formation program to become Extraordinary Ministers of Communion. They provide the Eucharist, support and a continuing contact with St. Michael’s Community for those unable to attend church.

Successful completion of Diocesan Pastoral Care Training is required to volunteer as a “visiting volunteer.”  Participants will develop visiting skills, learn to foster a ministry of presence, support individuals in various life stages (end of life, grief, sickness), and enhance empathy and compassion. Proclaimers have the task of making God present in the Liturgy of the word for our community.  For this reason, the proclaimer must prepare to and properly deliver the word of God.

Prospective proclaimers must attend a training session, usually held both in the spring and fall, before being assigned to the regular schedule.

Following the words of Pope John Paul II who said the rosary has a peaceful effect on those who pray it, praying the rosary leads us to see the face of Christ in others, to recognize one’s grief and suffering and to yearn to make the world more beautiful, more just and more closely conformed to God’s plan.

As Christians and members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, we are called to befriend and serve the poor by visiting them in their homes. We meet our clients in what is usually a time of crisis for them. This generally manifests itself as a request for food or sometimes help in paying bills to avoid eviction or having gas and/or power cut off.

Our role is to reach out to meet those who call on us where they are.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other, that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from Alcoholism. AA meets at St. Michael every Wednesday at 8 p.m. If you have a desire to quit drinking, you are welcome to join us.

During Christmas, the community of St. Michael comes together in service, preparing Christmas hampers for those in need both within our community and in neighboring areas.

St. Michael’s Library has a large selection of Catholic books and DVDs available for lending to adults and children of all ages, and is currently open after Mass on Sunday mornings.

The Diocese of Calgary requires all engaged couples to take a marriage preparation program prior to their wedding. This can be completed through a parish marriage preparation program, or through diocesan-sponsored events.

Our Moms and Tots group meets every Thursday morning after the 9 a.m. Mass for coffee, fellowship, and faith-sharing.

All moms are welcome to join and come with their little ones.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the sacramental process through which adults are welcomed into the Catholic Church. At the heart of the RCIA process is conversion, and each journeyer (candidate) requires a sponsor from the parish to support him/her.

Together in Action (TIA) is an annual major fundraising project by the Diocese of Calgary, which typically runs during Lent. At St. Michael’s, contributions are still welcome in order to reach our fundraising goal.

This ministry provides an opportunity for parishioners to interact spiritually and socially, bonding them into a closer knit church community.

The role of the Finance Council is to assist the pastor and administration in the control and reporting of parish finances. Membership is based on individual knowledge of accounting principles, financial management experience, and participation in parish life.

By working with the bereaved family members, the Funeral Reception ministry assist in the planning and serving of food at funeral receptions for families at St. Michael’s.

By enhancing the sanctuary with appropriate decorations, the Liturgical Environment Committee contributes in fostering a deeper worship of our Lord in the Liturgy.

The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) serves as a consultative body that makes recommendations to the pastor, including review and recommendation of all parish ministry plans.

This committee is responsible for counting, accounting for, and depositing the financial offerings on a weekly basis. They also activate and record the parish pre-authorized debit program. For more info, contact Michelle at accounting@saintmichael.ca.

The Sacristy Care committee is responsible for washing and ironing Altar cloths weekly, which requires about 4 hours per month. Volunteers are very welcome. Contact us at 403-249-0423 or email info@saintmichael.ca.

The responsibility of the Technical Support department is to facilitate the audio and visual needs of the parish. Volunteers in this ministry have the privilege of serving God in a growing and vibrant community. We have need for people to serve not only at the weekend Masses, but also throughout the week.
