The Cup of Our Salvation

In our gospel today, James and John are portrayed as self-centered status seekers who imagine themselves seated on thrones of glory beside the king of glory. Jesus corrects their mistaken view of God’s kingdom. He asks them: “Can you drink my cup?” Not really knowing what Jesus means, they answer: “Of course, we can.” He tells them: “That is my final offer. I am not into thrones of glory.”
On the night He was betrayed, Jesus sat at table with His group of twelve, took bread and wine, and gave Himself to the company of strangers who had become His disciples. And He encouraged them to do that in His memory. His kind of Church would be welcoming, outgoing, defying borders that divide people and welcoming strangers. “As the Father has sent Me, so I send you.” For the followers of Christ, life means encountering God in others. Our Christian vocation invites us to become a welcoming and caring community, just like our mission statement is worded.
At every Eucharistic gathering, we drink of the cup that is mentioned in our gospel today. It is this cup of salvation that brought Jesus to His death on the cross in order to liberate us from our slavery to sin and death. It is the cup of sacrifice, presence, and communion that we celebrate in the Eucharist. Every time we gather around the Lord’s table, we renew our commitment to imitate Christ’s offering of His life in our own respective lives. We renew our baptismal promise to love and serve God in one another. Through the Eucharist, we re-affirm our being and becoming a people who are born by dying, who receive by giving, and who gain life by losing it. Through the Eucharist, we become bread broken for others, by sharing our time, talent, and treasure in proclaiming the love of Christ in the world.
To drink of the cup of Christ is to work for what Christ stands for: justice and love in our world of hatred and indifference. To drink of the cup of Christ in the Eucharist means to share in His suffering, death, and resurrection through our life of service and sacrifice.
One of the names given to Jesus is Emmanuel which means God-is-with-us. What we need to offer our world today is our presence and closeness to the suffering and pain of our poor, deprived, and oppressed. Encountering God in one another and especially in our fellow human beings who are in need is what it means for us to drink the cup – the cup that Jesus offers us at each Eucharist – the cup of struggle, the cup of welcome, the cup of forgiveness and reconciliation, the cup of life and love, the cup of real presence.

“…whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all…” (Mk 10:35-45)
Even though we may not be touched by abuse in our families, we are affected by abuse daily. We see it portrayed in the media, we hear about the atrocities perpetrated on others though war, poverty, and discrimination, and we witness it through the mistreatment of others around us (strangers, friends, and relatives). Let us humbly pray that we readily recognize signs of abuse and take action to stop it whenever we can. Let us offer protection and solace to those abused in our faith community and Church.

October – The Month of the Rosary
The Catholic Church dedicates October as the month of the Rosary when Catholics honour Mary as the Mother of Jesus and our mother. We invite family and friends to pray the rosary during this special month for devotion to Blessed Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary. At St. Michael Parish, please join us to pray the rosary: Weekdays: Before Daily Mass at 8:20am, and Tuesdays: After Evening Mass at 6:30 pm.
St. Michael Statue Fundraiser
Now available… Smaller replicas of the new St Michael’s statue at $165.00 each are now available at the Gift Shop. All proceeds help cover the costs of the artwork by Timothy Schmalz.
Pastoral Council Update
Greetings to all our parishioners! We hope your summer was restful and rejuvenating. Our first meeting of autumn was held on Tuesday, September 24 and we have a few highlights to share.
– Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. A committee will be formed to explore the creation of an Adoration Ministry at SMCC.
– The Parish Renewal Team is excited to host the Parish Renewal Gathering on Sunday, September 29. This is a key step in developing a Pastoral Renewal Plan for our parish.
– Potluck Sundays are returning on November 3! Watch the bulletin for further details.
