What’s Our “Mission”?

October 27, 2024

Organizations, conscious of their purpose, have their respective “mission” statement. The mission statement is the principle of operation, the inspiration and basis of their various programs and activities.  
 
We, as a community at St. Michael’s, have our own mission statement.  “SMCC is a spirit-filled church where all may experience that they are seen, known and loved by God, and who share this encounter with others.”  Our community “vision” is “to be Calgary’s model field hospital because each believer is a medic sent out to warm the hearts and heal the wounds of those suffering in life.” 
 
Our ongoing Pastoral Renewal initiative is an opportunity to re-affirm our sense of mission as a Church community.  Our ongoing renewal efforts re-affirm our sense of being sent to proclaim the Good News in our own lives.  The word “mission” comes from a Latin term meaning “being sent”.  
 
Our mission as Church is about service and sacrifice.  It is about offering our lives in love and service of others.
 
In today’s gospel, Bartimeus, grateful for having his sight back, follows Jesus on the road to Jerusalem.  He is now on a “mission”, a fearless disciple of Jesus, ready to share whatever fate awaited Jesus in Jerusalem.  Like Bartimeus, are we spirit-filled and ready to share our encounter with God with others?  Do we see ourselves as medics sent to warm the hearts and heal the wounds of those suffering in life? 
 
“Lord Jesus, heal our spiritual blindness. Give us the courage to follow You faithfully on the road to life.  Give us strength to live for You day by day in the loving service of our brothers and sisters.  Be on the road of life our peace and our joy.  Amen.”

Healing Lines
 
Myth: The power of God alone will change the situation.  Reality: By “turning it all to God”, the individual avoids the help that God sends through the hands and hearts of other human beings, whether they be social workers, ministers, friends, other family members, or counsellors.  It is a fallacy to assume that God works WITHOUT any effort on the part of human beings.  We are created to be responsible selves, and thus obligated to use the gifts for healing that God places before us in this life.  And for the person who has acted abusively, accepting responsibility is the first step towards changing their behavior patterns.

Hallowtide

The Triduum of Hallowtide (All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day) is the three day period in which the Church solemnly commemorates all the faithful departed, celebrating the communion of saints in Heaven, and praying for the souls of the deceased in Purgatory. Mass will be celebrated as normal on Halloween, Thursday, October 31 at 9:00am. All Saints’ Day Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 1 at 9:00am, with the regular Holy Hour to follow. Later that same evening, on Friday, November 1, we will celebrate the vigil of All Souls’ Day with Mass at 6:00pm. This Mass will be offered for all the souls of the faithful departed, with special commemoration of those who are laid to rest in our Eternal Springs Columbarium. A small reception will follow Mass. The Columbarium will be open for public prayer that evening before and after Mass.

 

St. Michael Statue Fundraiser

Now available… Smaller replicas of the new St Michael’s statue at $165.00 each are now available at the Gift Shop.  All proceeds help cover the costs of the artwork by Timothy Schmalz.
