Apocalypse Now

November 17, 2024

Apocalypse Now is the title of a movie on the Vietnam war, partly filmed in locations in the Philippines.  It portrays the horror of the Vietnam war, evoking such apocalyptic visions found in the Bible, suggesting that the end of the world is at hand.  In Christian theology, apocalypse is classified under Eschatology, the study of the things to come, like death, judgment, and eternal life.  Apocalypse refers to the texts in Scriptures that refer to the imminent destruction of the world and the salvation of the righteous.  It is a basic component of the study of theology as it relates to the themes that give consoling hope of God’s promise of salvation and eternal life.

Apocalypse uses a highly symbolic language to describe persecution and catastrophe. The authors of the apocalyptic selections were trying to convey something to people which they did not want their persecutors to understand, so that reading the passages literally would be missing their real message.

This Sunday’s apocalyptic readings is consolation, hope, and God’s mercy.  In the face of suffering, danger, and persecution, we have to hold on to our faith in God’s love in our lives.  Amidst threats to our own survival, we look forward to the eternal life that Christ, through His mercy and love, has gained for us through His own suffering, death, and resurrection.  We look at death as a time of fulfillment of our journey to the Father, even as we look forward to that time with a mixture of hope and fear.  We are reminded that our life’s journey is indeed short and that we don’t even know the hour of our own death when we have to reckon with our Creator the life we have lived on borrowed time.

A powerful prayer in the Order of Christian Funerals brings home this message of hope and consolation as we continue our journey, our pilgrimage from this life to the next: “Lord God, whose days are without end and whose mercies beyond counting, keep us mindful that life is short and the hour of our death in unknown.  Let your Spirit guide our days on earth in the ways of holiness and justice, that we may serve you in union with the whole Church, sure in faith, strong in hope, perfected in love. And when our journey is ended, lead us rejoicing into your kingdom, where you live forever and ever.  Amen.”

Healing Lines

“Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”  As things begin to get busy this time of year, we need to guard against increased stress and short tempers.  Be sure to keep a healthy perspective on the pressures and remember the true meaning of this time of year.
