Witnessing to God’s light…

The metaphor of light suggests public presence. Light suggests a social reality that can be perceived, experienced, and imitated by all. The image of light as an attribute of God’s people suggests the powerful notion that as a people we are called to be a force for good in society. By becoming the people adhering to the Beatitudes, we become the light that has dawned in our world. We become agents and witnesses of God’s kingdom in our world. Christ, as our Savior and Lord, has come among us to show us the way to eternal life. He wants us to be the light of the world and salt of the earth so that our actions might lead others to follow God’s will in their lives and build His kingdom in this world.
As a Christian community, one of the powerful ways that we become the light of the world is our preferential option for the poor. The power of God’s love is shown through the lives of those who work for the poor. In our concern for the poor and the oppressed, we become agents of God’s kingdom that is characterized by the love that Christ has left us as a legacy.
The reading from the Prophet Isaiah invokes God’s people that their piety should consist in acting on behalf of the poor and the powerless, including action against unjust structures in society. The concrete actions that flow from true faith is sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, and fighting against injustices. Such concrete applications of the faith make God’s people a light dawning for all peoples. Psalm 112 echoes the theme of light dawning on the just whose lives give glory to God.
Paul’s letter to the Corinthians continues with the theme of God’s power as the source and inspiration of all the efforts in preaching the Good News to the poor. The gospel’s imperative to become the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” is what the ancient prophets called the Chosen People to be: a people whose life is characterized by justice and the preferential option for the poor.
Healing Lines
“Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Also remember to always shine light on abuse around you. In order to be part of the solution, we must highlight all forms of interpersonal violence and work to end its prevalence in our world.

Fr. Kelvin’s Farewell Cake Reception
There will be coffee and cake after all the weekend Masses on February 14 and 15 as we bid farewell to Fr. Kelvin and offer our blessings and good wishes for his new assignment at St. Mary’s Parish in Brooks.
2025 Tax Receipts
The 2025 tax receipts will be available for pick up from February 14 to February 22, 2026. They will be arranged alphabetically on a table in front of the main washrooms. After that date, the remaining tax receipts will be mailed.
Easter Fundraiser 2026
St. Michael Catholic Community raises funds year-round to support initiatives within our Church and in the surrounding communities. With our fundraiser, you may choose from 66 products from a variety of meat, fish, seafood, pasta, and sauces. With your purchases, we can help the less fortunate and those in our parish all while enjoying some delicious food over the Easter season which is right around the corner! Stock up your freezers now. The fundraiser opens February 1 and closes March 15. Orders will be available for pick up on Tuesday, March 24 between 4:00-5:00pm outside the parish doors. Pastoral Council Update
Pastoral Council wishes all parishioners a happy and blessed 2026! Our first meeting of the new year was held on Tuesday, January 27. A variety of matters were discussed including our excellent year end financial results, with special thanks to our generous parishioners! The Parish Renewal Team provided an update – watch for a new volunteer booklet coming out this year and a Stewardship Sunday in September. Initial discussions are underway regarding a parish pictorial directory (our last one was produced for the 60th anniversary of SMCC in 2019). Full details of these and all items will be published after Pastoral Council approval at our next meeting, scheduled for March 10, 2026. The minutes from our October meeting can be found here. Saturday Night Lights
Youths in grades 7-12 are invited to an evening of music, food, friendships, and talks hosted by Access 52. Dates for the evenings are February 14, and April 25. This is a free event. Click here to register.
Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras, marks the start of Lent, evolving into a time of celebrating and feasting, like a final opportunity for indulgence before the period of fasting and penance. It is also a significant liturgical movement towards the spiritual discipline of Lent. It is geared towards building community. The Knights of Columbus is hosting a pancake dinner on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 7:00pm (after the 6pm Mass). Please click here to RSVP by Friday, February 13.

Lenten Retreat / Mission
“Who is the Man of the Shroud?” Fr. Andrew Dalton L.C. reflects on the suffering (1), death (2) and resurrection (3) of Christ in the light of the Shroud of Turin on March 22, 23, and 24, 2026, respectively. Fr Dalton will celebrate Mass before the talks: Sunday, March 22, 5pm, Monday, March 23, 6pm and Tuesday, March 24, 6pm. Reception follows after the 5pm Mass on Sunday before the talk at 7pm, and after the talks on Monday and Tuesday. Details to follow.
Vacation Bible Camp 2026:
“Rainforest Falls – Exploring the Nature of God”
* SMCC 5-day Vacation Bible Camp (VBC) 2026 has limited spots available (50) for all students/minors aged Kindergarten (6yrs.) to Grade 12. $100 fee per student/minor or $200 maximum fee per family (same household only please).
