Love and the Resurrection
April 5, 2026
Our gospel reading today changes the mood of sadness, sorrow, devastation and even desperation after Christ’s death on the cross into an atmosphere of hope and expectation for His disciples. After long hours of mourning and confusion, the disciples begin to see a glimmer of a new beginning. Night, as it were, is giving way to the light of day.
Set in the darkness of Magdalene’s early morning visit to the tomb, the gospel reading is an account of several lights dawning: daybreak itself, the discover of the empty tomb by the disciples, the dawning awareness of what the empty tomb means, and the beloved disciple’s coming to believe that Jesus has been raised from the dead.
Most striking in this gospel account is the role of the beloved disciple, who having heard Mary’s story, outruns Peter to the tomb, yet allowing Peter to enter first. Both enter the tomb, but the beloved disciple alone is described as believing. The explanation given to John’s faith in the Christ’s resurrection is the power of love to put the believer in touch with the truth of the resurrection. John, because of his love for Jesus, comes more quickly to discern and believe that Jesus is risen.
The important thing that the beloved disciple has learned from Christ is love.
It is love that transforms death from the taking away of life from us into a voluntary giving of our life to God. It is love that makes our life meaningful, in spite of the apparent meaninglessness of life’s waste and disaster.
It is love that conquers death. It is love that outlives death and its power over us. Love makes our relationships last. It is the greatest of the things that last.
Let our love for one another be filled with the love that is inspired by our faith. Let Christ’s love for us inspires us to continue loving. For the love which Christ has showed us is the greatest of God’s gifts.

Healing Lines
Lord Jesus Christ, You told the women of Jerusalem not to weep for you but to weep for themselves. Be with women who suffer violence in their homes, as they weep for their sons caught up in the violence. Be with the women who live in domestic violence, who have learnt not to weep for their own pains and who have suffered so long that they are numb. Strengthen your Church in its care and support all who are in pain. Help us to be sensitive and caring, for you are the Lord who suffers and serves.

Together in Action (TIA)
The Together in Action 2026 campaign begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2026. The theme for this year’s TIA is inspired by the Jubilee Year of St. Francis. “But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.” (James 2:18) This year’s TIA also marks the final year of the financial commitment of the Diocese to the National Indigenous Reconciliation Fund, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives across Southern Alberta. Our target goal this year is $121,243, same as last year. We thank God for your generosity! All surplus funds this year will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
Multiply the Hope (MTH)
Beloved Faithful: Multiply the Hope is a diocesan initiative of last year’s Jubilee Year. With the matching program, the Diocese will match any contributions to the Multiply the Hope campaign to be applied against the outstanding St Michael Central Fund Loan (i.e. mortgage). To accelerate the repayment of the outstanding balance, we would encourage you to consider re-directing any building fund contributions made (either on-line, by text, pre-authorized payment or directly) to Multiply the Hope instead. Pontifical Collection for the Church in the Holy Land on Good Friday, April 3, 2026
The Good Friday Collection helps to maintain the Church of the Holy Land by providing educational, pastoral, and social support of Catholic youth and families committed to living their faith in the land where Christ lived, and by maintaining the Holy Sites that are so important to the faith of Christians everywhere. At the request of the Holy See, this Pontifical Collection will be taken during the Good Friday celebration on April 3, 2026. Those who are unable to attend the service, or who prefer to contribute online, may use Credit Cards, Interac, or Canadahelps, accessible at: www.commissariat.ca, in the “Support Us” link.
Easter Vigil Reception
There will be a light reception following the Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday, April 4 to celebrate our highest holiest night of the year. If you are attending the Easter Vigil, please plan to bring a platter of sandwiches, cupcakes, or cookies for all to share.
