Confirmation at St. Michael’s
2022 Confirmation Program
The Confirmation preparation program that we are using in the Diocese of Calgary for 2021 is the online course of Chosen by Ascension Press. Confirmation Candidates will have access to video lessons and each week will watch a video, complete a journal entry or ‘challenge’, and read the stories in each chapter. Although the program is 24 lessons, our Candidates have only 11 lessons to complete.
Each candidate will be expected to complete 4 hours of Parish or Outreach service, and each candidate will fill in a Service Commitment Form . Completion of Service activity can commence once registration for Confirmation has been made (no retroactive service activities will be permitted without permission from the Confirmation Coordinator). These activities should be new for the candidate and allow for him/her to experience service in an area that challenges them (i.e. if your child babysits, babysitting is not a Confirmation service choice). The activities should also be an opportunity for your child to experience corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Please look at the two Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy handouts below to guide your projects. Although there are many volunteer opportunities for teens, we want the candidates to learn about the needs of the community through the values of the three theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity, and/or the seven corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. Their volunteer experiences should reflect those actions.
Candidates will have one opportunity to have Confession before Confirmation but if the date does not work, please ensure your child goes to Confession before the Confirmation Mass.
Each candidate will write a letter to the Bishop expressing a desire to be Confirmed, what s/he experienced in his/her service project. This is the final wrap up project of Confirmation preparation which will be a chance to summarize all that the candidate learned over the few months of preparation.
- Parents will need to register twice:
- Complete the Mass Journal, Service Project, and Letter to Bishop McGrattan (click here for a guide).
Registration is open for the whole month of January. Once you are registered with Ascension’s online course, an outline of the required videos and lessons for the program will be sent to you.
Please see the chart below for the overview of the program (click image to enlarge).
