Law and Spirit

In the Old Testament, the divine pattern for human conduct was set forth in the Ten Commandments which is a summary of instructions given to God’s chosen people before they entered the Promised Land. In the New Testament, God reveals himself to us in the person of Jesus who has shown us how we are to live. With Christ’s new commandment of love, we freely respond to the call for holiness in our respective lives.
There is a certain parallelism between the Ten Commandments handed down to Moses on Mt. Sinai and the Beatitudes which Christ preached on the Mount which is featured in our gospel reading today. So to speak, the Beatitudes becomes the New Testament version of the Ten Commandments. The Beatitudes expresses a personal commitment to what Christ demands as part of our calling as God’s children. The Beatitudes is the positive response to Christ’s call to love, making us comply with our external acts of the law as an expression of our adherence to love and forgiveness.
The gift of God’s love in Christ, as exemplified in the Eucharist, becomes the central force of our acts of justice, kindness and love. Just evil intentions come from the human heart, goodness comes from the grace of God. Living the Christian faith is not all about complying with outward practices of our religion. Christian faith has to be deeply rooted in our souls, making the word of God as the source of all our actions and thoughts.
God gives us the capacity to act in accordance with God’s love in Jesus Christ who became human so He can share our humanity but not our sinfulness. We go beyond our religious practices and acts of justice and charity to realize that it is God’s grace that moves us to pursue what is good. As St. Paul asserts: “It is God’s doing that He has become our wisdom, our virtue, our holiness and our freedom.” And quoting the prophet Jeremiah, St. Paul adds: “If anyone wants to boast, let him boast about the Lord.”

Key Card Changes
Our door system has been undergoing an upgrade. All key cards currently in circulation will no longer work. Any parishioners with a key card for ministry or program purposes will need to come to the office for a new card starting February 15.
Wild Goose Bible Study
Mondays, starting February 28
“The Wild Goose” is a study on the Holy Spirit. He desires a relationship with us that will take us on the greatest adventure imaginable, a journey to the very heart of God. This is a 14-part series, featuring Fr. Dave Pivonka. It will be via Zoom, every Monday at 7 p.m. and will go from February 28 until June 6. Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Special thanks to all St. Michael parishioners for supporting the Society of St. Vincent de Paul! During the month of January we helped 24 families (38 adults and 20 children). We continue preparing for this year’s Christmas Hamper distribution.
We are looking for new members. If you are interested, contact us at SSVP@saintmichael.ca or 403-249-0423 ext 122.
Donations of non-perishable food items can be dropped off in the SSVP food chest in the gathering area. Currently we are looking for: cereal, pasta sauce, canned vegetables and canned fish/meat.
Monetary donations can be deposited in the drop-box in the food chest or by online donations through the St. Michaels Parish website https://saintmichael.ca/giving/. Please indicate funds are for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the drop-down menu.
