Approaching the Paschal Mystery

It is said that we make a living with what we get but we make a life with what we give. In Christian life, we live by dying to ourselves. We receive by giving.

During our Lenten journey, our liturgy invites us to come forth from our spiritual grave to the overflowing grace of God’s liberating love through our own imitation of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection. During this Lenten observance, we prepare for our celebration of Christ’s paschal mystery: his sacrificial death on the cross and his resurrection from the dead. In our own faith journey, this means that we have to be more self-giving and self-sacrificing in our relationship with one another, in imitation of Christ’s self-giving sacrifice on the cross if we expect to join him in our own resurrection.

The Paschal Mystery is the mystery involving the suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord. The term “paschal” has Old Testament significance. It is related to the Jewish idea of sacrifice which is the predecessor of the Sacrifice of the Mass. “Paschal” refers to the lamb that is offered as a burnt sacrifice for the reparation of sins. Christ is the “Lamb of God”, the New Testament sacrifice that has replaced all sacrifices.

In the Old Testament, the priest is distinct from the sacrifice. The priest offers the sacrifice. In the New Testament, the priest becomes the sacrifice at the same time. With Christ, priest and sacrifice become identical. The idea of sacrificial giving is important in approaching the Paschal Mystery. It is essential to understanding the core of Christian spirituality. This is to say that Christ’s death on Calvary is central to the understanding of God’s reality. It demonstrates in an experiential and human way the depth of God’s life and love.

The Eucharist embodies the main operating principle of the Paschal Mystery, the mystery of life by dying. May our observance of the Lenten discipline help us in approaching the Paschal Mystery with the right disposition of body, mind and spirit.

Announcements:

Columbarium Access

With the recent door control upgrade, we will be reissuing access cards. This will require us to order more cards and program them into the new system, and with many Columbarium clients, this will take some time. We estimate 2-4 weeks depending on the availability of cards from our vendor. In the meantime, as previously noted the Columbarium door will be unlocked from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily to allow for visiting. When all the cards are programmed and ready to distribute, we will make an announcement on Flocknote and in the bulletin. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Update, March 6: We are still waiting on access cards from our vendor. They are experiencing supply issues.

Weekday Masses

Please note, daily Mass (Tuesday—Thursday) will now be celebrated in the Day Chapel. Friday daily Mass and Holy Hour will continue in the Main Sanctuary. Friday evening Mass and Stations of the Cross will be celebrated in the Day Chapel.

God Squad

Gift Shop

St. Michael’s Gift Shop is now open after all the Sunday Masses. Bibles, Rosaries, and gifts for Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. We are in need of volunteers. If you can spare some time after Mass, please contact Marvin at mmatthews@saintmichael.ca.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Special thanks to all St. Michael parishioners for supporting the Society of St. Vincent de Paul! During the month of January we helped 24 families (38 adults and 20 children). We continue preparing for this year’s Christmas Hamper distribution.

We are looking for new members. If you are interested, contact us at SSVP@saintmichael.ca or 403-249-0423 ext 122.

Donations of non-perishable food items can be dropped off in the SSVP food chest in the gathering area. Currently we are looking for: cereal, pasta sauce, canned vegetables and canned fish/meat.

Monetary donations can be deposited in the drop-box in the food chest or by online donations through the St. Michaels Parish website https://saintmichael.ca/giving/. Please indicate funds are for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the drop-down menu.
