The Conversion Factor

September 11, 2022

Today’s readings underscore the theme of healing and reconciliation not only as a task we, as a Christian community, have to undertake in the world around us but especially as personal individuals who have to be continually converted to God and His command of love and forgiveness. 
 
The prophet Ezekiel, in the first reading, preaches conversion: warns the people to turn away from their evil ways and return to God’s grace. His prophecy shows God’s care and concern for his people and God’s invitation to healing and reconciliation. The prophet’s message is directed to the conversion of the individual rather than the communal responsibility of the people to repent. The individual’s conversion leads communal conversion.
 
The gospel reading today talks about winning back lost or wayward members of the community back to God’s grace and the life of the community. The personal conversion of the individual is underscored in this exhortation to deal with frictions of community life in the spirit of love and prayer. In the second reading, St. Paul reminds the community in Rome of the importance of love as the basis of all the actions and activities of believers. Conversion of heart is a movement from above, brought about by the gift of God’s love and mercy. The fulfillment of the law, St. Paul explains, is brought about by an inward attitude of love. Love inspires the believer to experience true freedom in relation to the precepts of the law.
 
Our conversion experience is oftentimes characterized by a four-fold pattern: tension or crisis in our life, an insight from our past failure or disaster, an experience of God’s mercy and the gracious invitation from God to a new life. Our conversion can be a multiple process. Our repeated failure to persevere in God’s gracious love and presence makes us relapse to sin and inequity.   
 
Our conversion to God is our personal journey of faith.  And our life of conversion is always in the context of others who have to deal with their own respective lives of ongoing conversion. We are saved together, not alone.  It is not enough that we mind our own salvation. We have to mind the salvation of others, especially in our community. Our church celebration today embodies this basic element of community that is rooted in our own personal conversion of faith and love.

Moms & Tots

Thursday mornings at 9:30 am

Calling all parents and their little ones, “Moms and Tots” is back! Parents with newborns, babies, toddlers and preschoolers are invited to join us for coffee, social and play every Thursday morning in the St. Nicholas Room.  No registration required.

 

Women’s Ministry  Meet and Greet

The Women’s Ministry is hosting a  meet and greet and serving coffee and cookies after the 9 am Sunday Mass. All are invited.

 

Feast of St. Michael

Thursday, September 29 at 6 pm

All are invited to come celebrate the feast of our patron, St. Michael the Archangel, on Thursday, September 29. There will be a Mass at 6 pm, followed by dinner put on by our Knights of Columbus. Wine will also be served. There is no cost, but free will offerings are warmly accepted. This will also be an opportunity to thank and celebrate all of our volunteers, as well as to gather as a Catholic community after two long years apart. To sign up please find the registration link on the St. Michael home page next to the Mass times. Kindly RSVP on or before Friday, September 23 to allow for food planning.

 

Knitting Ministry

Wednesday, September 14 at 10 am

We are excited to start meeting again and invite you to join us on Wednesday, September 14, from 10 am to 12 pm in the Gathering Area for fellowship and sharing as we work on our projects.  We meet every second Wednesday and welcome anyone who knits or crotchets.  If you have any questions or want more info, please call Carol at 403-282-6469 or Christine at 403-686-2820.

 

Blessing of Pets

Saturday, October 1 at 2 pm

In honor of St. Francis’ feast on October 4, all are invited to bring their pets for a blessing on Saturday, October 1 at 2 pm, outside the church’s main entrance. To ensure their safety, please make sure that your pets are leashed.

 

Priest Study Days—Cancellation of Daily Mass

Masses will be cancelled on October 4th ,5th  and 6th as the priests will be away on study days. 

 

Society of St. Vincent de Paul 

Special thanks to all St. Michael parishioners for supporting the Society of St. Vincent de Paul!  During the month of June we helped 31 families (41 adults and 32 children). If you or anyone you know needs assistance, please contact us at SSVP@saintmichael.ca or 403-249-0423 ext 122.

We are looking for new members. If you are interested, contact us at SSVP@saintmichael.ca or 403-249-0423 ext 122. 

Donations of non-perishable food items can be dropped off in the SSVP food chest in the gathering area. Currently we are looking for: cereal, pasta sauce, canned vegetables and canned fish/meat.

Monetary donations can be deposited in the drop-box in the food chest or by online donations through the St. Michaels Parish website https://saintmichael.ca/giving/. Please indicate funds are for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the drop-down menu.
