The Family Factor…

Strengthening the family is one focal thrust of our ongoing renewal. Family is rooted in marriage which brings about children who need the unique care of a father and a mother. Marriage affects our social and public life, especially in terms of procreation and the care and education of children. Marriage matters because God has ordained it as part of the design of creation and redemption.  In our faith, marriage is celebrated as a sacrament, that is, an expression of God’s love for all of us.  More than ever, we have to assert the importance and the sacredness of the institution of marriage and the family. 
 
It is important to note that parental care is not exclusively the provision of the biological needs and wants of children. Marital obligation is not confined to the bedroom. The physical aspect of the family relationship is just one of the many areas of responsibility. In some cases, it may not prove very important. Some parents tend to think that the educational development of their children is the primary obligation of the school. But the reality is that they are charged with that responsibility. The religious and spiritual training of the children is not the exclusive domain of the Church, but a shared responsibility of both parents. The school and the Church, together with the government, are joint partners of the family in the full development of the future citizens of our land.
 
Some marital partners think that marriage is primarily a sexual relationship. But the truth is marriage is the totality of the marital relationship. The moral relationship is an area where true lasting friendship thrives. The moral and spiritual relationship can be a dependable and solid basis for the other levels of relationship. It can be a source of emotional, as well as physical strength, especially during the difficult times of marriage.
 
The working principle of the Christian family is based on the higher values of love and service, as enumerated in the Beatitudes in today’s gospel. It hinges on our personal relationship with our God who is at the center of our lives. The solid basis of the marital relationship is not the love of husband and wife for each other but their own respective relationship with their God. In many Church documents, the family has been described as the domestic Church or the microcosm Church. The Bishops of Northern Canada in a joint letter some time ago did express a deep concern for family violence, particularly against women: “Let us pray that our families and communities will be known by how much each member loves, respects, and supports the others”.

Healing Lines
 
Faith communities and faith leaders have a unique role to play in responding to the needs of abuse victims and their families. First and foremost, faith communities need to be safe places to disclose abuse. Persons of faith who are abused often feel that their spirit has been broken, that God does not care about their life, that they are worthless in every way. The healing journey from victim to survivor is long and arduous; ongoing emotional support and many caregivers are required. Many persons of faith who are abused would like assistance from both community agencies and their faith fellowship. Become one of the chosen as we are asked to assist wherever we can.

St. Michael Statue Fundraiser

Smaller replicas of the new St. Michael’s statue at $165 each are now available at the Gift Shop. All proceeds help cover the costs of the artwork by Timothy Schmalz.

 

Pastoral Council Update

Greetings to all our parishioners! We hope your summer was restful and rejuvenating. Our first meeting of autumn was held on Tuesday, September 24 and we have a few highlights to share. 

– Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. A committee will be formed to explore the creation of an Adoration Ministry at SMCC. 

– The Parish Renewal Team is excited to host the Parish Renewal Gathering on Sunday, September 29. This is a key step in developing a Pastoral Renewal Plan for our parish. 

– Potluck Sundays are returning on November 3! Watch the bulletin for further details.
