We are the Church!
June 8, 2025
While the word ‘Church’ indicates a special building designated for worship, as in St. Michael Church, it also refers to an assembly, a congregation, gathering together of people or a community. The Second Vatican Council defines the Church as the People of God, who are constituted in Christ by the Holy Spirit. The Latin term for Church ‘ecclesia’ derives from the Greek which means ‘to call out of’. It is a people set apart, a people called out of darkness into Christ’s wonderful light.
The Church as an organized society existing in our world and history is a visible reality. We call this the Church, an institution, a hierarchy. The Church is also spiritual reality that transcends our world and our history. This is also referred to as the charismatic aspect of the Church. The Church is a mystery and a sacrament. It is a sign and instrument of a spiritual reality. The Church as a sacrament contains within itself, as well as communicates, God’s power and presence.
The purpose of the Church is to make holy the members of Christ’s body through the love given by Christ. By our baptism, we become part of the Church. We share in God’s grace through the Church which is built on the foundation of Christ who is our way, the truth, and the life. We are the Church.
“It is necessary that in the light of faith, all rediscover the true meaning of the parish, that is, the place where the very ‘mystery’ of church is present and at work… The parish is not principally a structure, a territory or a building, but rather, ‘the family of God’, ‘a fellowship afire with a unifying spirit’, ‘a familial and welcoming home’, ‘a community of the faithful’. Plainly and simply, the parish is founded on a theological reality because it is a Eucharistic community.” (Saint John Paul II)
As we continue with our parish renewal initiative, let us transform our efforts into wonderful opportunities to relate with one another in a personal way, to encounter one another on behalf of Christ who works in our midst and to strengthen the bonds that ties us together as one people, sharing the one bread in the Eucharist and worshipping the one Lord of all.

Healing Lines
Our goal remains to move the search for reconciliation and peace “from the periphery to the Centre of the life and witness of the Church.” Peace-building in non-violent ways is a Christian core virtue and an imperative of the gospel message itself. We are determined to become what we are called to be: “ambassadors of reconciliation” (2 Cor 5). This is the mission of healing, including responsible accompaniment for those who are voiceless as well as speaking truth to those in power. We will reject every attempt to use violence and fear as tools of politics.

Face-to-Face Youth Night (Gr. 6-8)
The last Youth Night, with Face-to-Face Ministries, will be June 14. The Youth Night is for Grades 6-8 from 6:30-8:30pm. Pizza will be provided. This is a free event; no registration is needed.
40 Hours for Vocations
In collaboration with the Diocese of Calgary, St. Michael’s will be hosting 40 continuous hours of Eucharistic Adoration for vocations from Friday, June 6 at 3:00pm until Sunday, June 8 at 8:00am (note: there will be no Adoration during the 5:00pm Saturday Mass). Vocations Rally
The entire Diocese of Calgary is invited to join us for our second annual Vocations Rally here at St. Michael’s on Pentecost Sunday, June 8 from 11:00am-4:30pm. The Vocations Rally begins with the 11:00am Mass celebrated by Bishop McGrattan, followed by lunch, speakers, a panel, and much more! Admission and lunch are free, but registration is required. Parish Renewal
We are excited to share that the first draft of our Parish Renewal Plan is ready! Copies will be emailed to all Ministry Coordinators over the weekend. Copies will also be distributed to the parish via Flocknote and will also be available on the Parish Renewal website https://saintmichael.ca/parish-renewal/

If you haven’t received a copy and would like one, kindly email the office at info@saintmichael.ca or call 403-249-0423. Feedback and comments are welcomed at info@saintmichael.ca until June 6 to give the Parish Renewal Team time to complete the final draft and submit it to the Diocese of Calgary by the due date, June 15. Pastoral Council
Pastoral Council met for a final business meeting on Tuesday, May 20 before summer break. * Thank you to the dedicated men and women who have sat on council for the prescribed three-year term and who will be stepping down in June. Together in Action (TIA)
This year’s goal is $121,243 which is the same as the previous few years. Thanks to your generosity, we reached the target amount last year. All surplus funds this year will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
