Christian discipleship is about following the will of God in our lives. It is living the faith which the Lord has gifted us with. It is not merely believing what we hear or read in Scriptures. It is not merely preaching or teaching what we believe and understand in our faith. It is putting into practice what we believe.
To approach Christ with our head is scholarship. To approach him with our heart as well as with our head is discipleship. Scholarship cannot guarantee discipleship. Understanding the Beatitudes is quite different from actually living them in our daily life. But scholarship can enhance discipleship. Receiving the sacraments after some reasonable preparation through a series of meetings makes a world of difference from receiving them without any process of preparation. Of course, receiving the sacraments or being “sacramentalized” is not always a guarantee of true Christian discipleship which involves a personal relationship with our personal God.
Our coming to worship, for example, is not only about learning the values by which we live. It is about encountering God in the Eucharist and in the Word in the context of our daily life. We all come from different origins and orientations to offer the totality of our experiences in one common sacrifice of praise. We come together to celebrate our unity in diversity.
During the canonization of the first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz, Pope John Paul II referred to him as the “most improbable of saints”. He explained in his message: “The Lord gives us saints at the right time and God waited 350 years to give us this saint… It is the heroism which he demonstrated as a lay witness to the faith which is very important in today’s world. Faith and life for Lorenzo was synonymous and inseparable. Life without faith would have been without value… He proved that sanctity and heroism are there for anybody and the final victory is made to size for each one of us.”
Sanctity is the other word for discipleship. It is made to size for each one of us. We are called to follow the will of God in our own respective lives. We are called to become saints in our own respective state of affairs.

World Youth Day
World Youth Day 2027, taking place in South Korea from August 3–8, 2027, is a unique opportunity for young adults to deepen their faith, encounter Christ alongside pilgrims from around the world, and grow in community with fellow Catholics. This pilgrimage is more than a trip, it is an invitation to answer God’s call, strengthen your relationship with Him, and bring that renewed faith back to your parish and community. Together in Action (TIA)
The Together in Action 2026 campaign begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2026. The theme for this year’s TIA is inspired by the Jubilee Year of St. Francis. “But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.” (James 2:18) This year’s TIA also marks the final year of the financial commitment of the Diocese to the National Indigenous Reconciliation Fund, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives across Southern Alberta. Our target goal this year is $121,243, same as last year. We thank God for your generosity! All surplus funds this year will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
