Love & Fatherhood

June 18, 2023

“Father! To God Himself we cannot give a holier Name”. Thus writes William Wordsworth in one of his sonnets.

Decades ago, a card company was reportedly selling seven times more cards for Mother’s Day than for Father’s Day. Telephone-wise, Mother’s Day was then second to Christmas Day for the highest number of calls. But Father’s Day held then the record for the highest number of collect calls.

We usually get well informed about notorious fathers, but apparently, not equal time and treatment is given to the exemplary fathers who are always there for their children. This little blurb is an effort to give fathers what they deserve: a better publicity…

Mothers and fathers are equal in dignity and responsibility, as resounded by the late Pope John Paul II in his apostolic exhortation Familiaris Consortio. Complementarity might be a more appropriate adjective to describe the relationship between fatherhood and motherhood. Father’s Day and Mother’s Day are really very much alike, except that we might end up buying a much cheaper gift on Father’s Day.

According to its origins, Father’s Day was inspired by the spirit of self-sacrifice of fathers who loved and cared for their families. Father’s Day is a celebration of the unselfish love and dedication of fathers in raising their children.

We need to re-capture the spirit of fatherhood: courage, sacrifice & love. Christian fatherhood reflects the nature of God’s self-sacrificing love. God’s fatherly love is shown in accepting the offering of His Son in the sacrifice of the cross. The fullness of fatherhood, and Christian life for that matter, is reached through dying to ourselves, to our personal dreams and desires. This is what Christian life entails: to sacrifice life in order to save it.

Father’s Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting, and to honor and commemorate fathers, forefathers and father-figures. The first observance of Father’s Day is believed to have been held on July 5, 1908 in a church located in Fairmont, West Virginia, by Dr. Robert Webb. We wish Happy Father’s Day to all fathers in our parish and encourage them to be part of the solution to end family violence.

Kids in Grades: 1, 2, and 3 are invited to celebrate God’s amazing love for them, and His wonder-filled Word within the Sacred Mass. During our Children’s Liturgy of the Word Program, children are offered time to grow closer to God in a special place, and in a way that is natural for their age and development. We encourage full, conscious, and active participation through the Holy Scriptures, Rituals of the Mass, and Prayer using dialogue, singing, activities and making friends with their fellow little brothers and sisters in Christ. In this way we strengthen and develop in relationship with Jesus who lives in the heart of all God’s children.
