What you need to know from this weekend’s bulletin:

“Come and see…”

January 14, 2024

Christ’s invitation to “come and see…” is an invitation to come home to God. Since we come from God, created in his own image and likeness, we come back to Him by heeding His Son’s call to “come and see…”, that is, to live the life according to His plan of salvation and redemption. Christ invites us to “come and see…” what it is like to become again God’s children and heirs of His kingdom.

Just as the call of Samuel hinged on his reliance on Eli, so we rely on others to help us recognize God’s invitation to “come and see…” . We realize God’s call through our encounter with strangers who are our brothers and sisters we have not met before. We honor God’s invitation to “come and see…” through our celebration of the Eucharist and other community events, through our daily encounter with one another in love and friendship.

To “come and see…” is what Christian discipleship is all about. Becoming a disciple of Jesus is about imitating Him in His love and concern for us, His self-giving and self-sacrificing love as exemplified by his suffering and death on the cross. Christian discipleship is about complete giving of self in a personal friendship with Him. To “come and see…” inspires and leads us to stay in His love and friendship in the spirit of coming home to God. Christian discipleship is about returning to God with a renewed commitment to become Christ’s disciples in mission, sent to spread His gospel of love and liberation. It is a lifestyle, a mentality that we live out in our lives. It is about being good and faithful stewards of God’s gift of life and its resources.

Our Christian life, inspired and based on our faith, is our individual response to Christ’s invitation to “come and see…” . Faith is a movement from above, moving our hearts to believe and respond to the prompting of the Spirit. This response to this divine invitation is deeply personal, but never private. Our personal faith response is bound to affect others around us. Inevitably, our faith becomes social and communal. We are saved not alone, but together with others. Our faith cannot thrive in a vacuum. It has to spread itself in love and solidarity. Our becoming Church is our communal response to Christ’s invitation to “come and see…” .

May our Sunday Eucharist remind us that just as Christ is bread broken for all of us so we have to become bread broken for others through our welcoming and caring, through our sharing and serving, through our response to “come and see..” how God loves and how He expects us to relate with others in love and friendship.

Healing Lines

“It’s not an enemy who taunts me – then I could bear it; It is not an adversary who deals insolently with me – then I could hide from him. But it is you, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. We used to hold sweet converse together within God’s house we walked in fellowship.” (Psalms 55:12-14) The tragedy of family violence is that it is so personal. The sense of betrayal and hurt is deeply wounding. Be ready to recognize the signs of abuse and be willing to reach out, as God would, to offer refuge and shelter to those affected by this violence.
