COVID-19 Preventive Measures – New
The Diocese of Calgary released their General Directives in Preventing the Spread of the COVID-19 Virus, which includes important information on new liturgical measures, as well as international travel and pilgrimages. Please read the directives online at catholicyyc.ca. In accordance with these directives, St. Michael’s is implementing (and, on some items, have already implemented) the following measures to prevent the spread of the virus:
- At the Sign of Peace, refrain from shaking hands – a simple bow, nod, or “Peace be with you” to your neighbour is appropriate.
- Baptismal and Holy Water fonts will be emptied and sanitized.
- Holy Communion will be distributed under one species only — the Body of Christ (host).
- Only priests may distribute Holy Communion on the tongue. Hence, if you wish to receive Holy Communion in this manner, please approach the queue for one of our priests and not the queue for any of the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. (Note: it has been shared by some public health experts that there is no indication of increased risk of infection in receiving the host either on the tongue or on the hand).
- Visits to homes and elderly care facilities by the Pastoral Care Ministry will be cancelled until after Easter. For the meantime, Fr. John and Fr. Pilmaiken will continue going to facilities for anyone who requests the Sacrament of the Sick.
- The Sunday Obligation does not apply to those who are ill, especially those who suffer from a contagious illness. Those with flu-like symptoms are encouraged to remain at home as an act of charity.
Please also continue to practice healthy hygiene – wash your hands with soap and use hand sanitizer regularly, remain at home if you are sick, sneeze or cough into your sleeve, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Let us continue to care for one another as we pray for all those affected worldwide by COVID-19.
