Our Sense of Mission

October 23, 2022

Organizations, who are conscious of their purpose, come up with a mission statement which is usually prominently displayed in their headquarters or offices. The mission statement becomes their inspiration and guide in their efforts to achieve their noble goals. It also becomes the basis for their periodic evaluation to improve their performance.

We, as a church community at Saint Michael, have our own mission statement. “SMCC is a spirit-filled church where all may experience that they are seen, known and loved by God, and who share this encounter with others.” (Mission Statement). ”To be Calgary’s model field hospital because each believer is a medic sent out to warm the hearts and heal the wounds of those suffering in life…” (Vision).

The celebration of World Mission Sunday is an opportunity for all of us to re-affirm our sense of mission as a church community. The World Mission Sunday celebration is not so much about the special contribution we make for the missionary efforts of the church. It is more about our sense of being sent to proclaim the Good News in our own lives. It is more about our readiness to carry the light of the Gospel to all the ends of the earth, beginning with our own immediate friends, families and communities.

The word “mission” comes from a Latin term meaning “being sent”. We are a community commissioned to bring the Good News of Salvation to all peoples. Missionaries are disciples tasked with the missionary activity in places where there is need for the Gospel to be preached and witnessed.

Our sense of mission requires us to be subject to what Christ requires of his followers which can be summed up in his more emphatic statements on discipleship found in the gospels. “If you want to be great, become a servant.” “If you want to be first, be at the service of others.” “I did not come to be served, but to serve.” “I didn’t come to save my life, but to give my life for others.” Our mission as a church is about service and sacrifice. It is about offering our lives in love and service of others.

Healing Lines

Even though we may not be touched by abuse in our families, we are affected by abuse daily. We see it portrayed in the media, we hear about the atrocities perpetrated on others through war, poverty and discrimination, and we witness it through the mistreatment of others around us (strangers, friends and relatives). Let us humbly pray that we readily recognize signs of abuse and take action to stop it whenever we can. Let us offer protection and solace to those abused in our faith community and Church.
