Post-Thanksgiving Reflection

Compassion and care for others surely prompt our own giving. Our giving can sometimes be colored by a need for recognition or affirmation. Contributing money to the Church or charitable works is important. We can also contribute our time and talent through our various volunteer opportunities. There are many ministries that are in need of willing hands and hearts to do God’s work in our world. We can also be generous in sharing ourselves in simple ways: smiling or making an eye contact when interacting with others, as in sharing the Sign of Peace at Mass.
It is said that there are three types of givers: grudge gives, duty givers, and thanks givers. Grudge givers say, “I hate to give.” Grudge givers give reluctantly and with a certain feeling of resentment. Duty givers say, “I ought to give.” Duty givers also give reluctantly and with certain feeling of obligation. Thanks givers say, “I want to give.” They give from the heart, without a feeling of resentment or obligation.
When St. Paul was addressing the Christians in Corinth about a special collection for the poor in Jerusalem, he wrote: “Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion” (referring to the grudge and duty givers), “for God loves a cheerful giver” (referring now to thanks givers). Jesus refers to thanks givers when he asserts, “Give and gifts will be given to you. Good measure, packed together, shaken together, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap…” (Luke 6:38) What counts in God’s eyes is not the size of the gift but the size of the giver’s heart. We always agree when we say about a gift we receive that it is not really the intrinsic value of the gift that counts, but rather the thought that inspired the gift.
As we approach the end of the year, we reflect on our giving back to our community. There are many current needs we as a Church have to deal with… our elevator upgrade, topping up our Together in Action (TIA) target goal, Christmas Hampers, maintenance expenses and loan repayments, among others. Your year-end contributions actually make or break our annual bottom-line. And always remember that God is never outdone in generosity!
Healing Lines
“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Lk 18:9-14) We may not be touched by abuse in our families, but we are affected by abuse daily. We see it portrayed in the media, we hear about the atrocities perpetrated on others though war, poverty and discrimination, and we witness it through the mistreatment of others around us. Let us humbly pray that we readily recognize signs of abuse and take action to stop it whenever we can. Let us offer protection and solace to those abused in our faith community and Church.

Fall Fundraiser
We are launching a parish-wide fundraising sale of high-quality protein products to help support our increasing needs as a community as we continue to witness God’s love and compassion in our midst. With any purchase, you contribute to our Church’s finances while enjoying some delicious food over the Advent and Christmas period. There are over 60 products to choose from! Your orders must be placed by Sunday, November 30 and can be picked up on Tuesday, December 9 from 4:00-5:00 pm at St. Michael’s Church. Elevation Youth Group (Gr. 4-6)
Youths in Grade 4-6 are invited to join our brand new youth group: ELEVATION youth! Join us on Fridays from 6:30-8:30pm in the St. Nicholas room for devotions, snacks, games, faith, and fun! The program will start on November 7, with the final schedule coming out shortly, and will run until the spring. Pre-registration is required and capacity is dependent on volunteer availability. Altar Servers Recognition Mass
The Serra Club of Calgary is organizing a special Mass at St. Michael Catholic Community for all altar servers in the Diocese of Calgary. The Mass will be celebrated by The Most Rev. William T. McGrattan, Bishop of Calgary. Please note that the date has been changed from Sunday, November 2, 2025, to Sunday, November 23, 2025, due to a change in the bishop’s schedule. Christmas Hampers
Christmas Hamper Program: Mark your calendars! Saint Michael Catholic Community’s annual Christmas Hamper Assembly and Delivery Day will be Monday, December 15. Watch for volunteer sign up in the Narthex after all Masses on the last two weekends of November. Questions? Email christmashampers@saintmichael.ca
Elevator Upgrade
An elevator upgrade work will be underway for two weeks (November 10-21). The elevator will be taken out of service for the entire time. We apologize for the inconvenience… Those who are interested in supporting this special project ($61,766.14 +tax) may contact the Office or Fr. Edmund for details.
Contribution Envelopes
We have several 2025 envelope boxes that have not been picked up. Please pick up your envelope box before October 31, 2025. If you do not pick up, your box number will be re-assigned. Please ensure you are only using the envelope box for the current year. We have reduced envelope boxes over the last several years which has resulted in changing of envelope numbers.
Saturday Night Lights
Youths in grades 7-12 are invited to an evening of music, food, friendships, and talks hosted by Access 52. Dates for the evenings are October 25, November 29, January 10, February 14, and April 25. Together in Action (TIA)
This year’s goal is $121,243 and currently, we have reached 65% of this target amount. Thanks to your generosity, we reached this target amount last year. All surplus funds will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
