The Humanity of the Papacy & the Priesthood

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” This is a favorite quotation from Psalm 23 which is an Old Testament allusion to Christ who has become our Shepherd and Savior.
In the first-century Palestine, the sheep are gathered for the night in an enclosed area with one opening where the shepherd lies across to protect the sheep from any predators. Even when several flocks are mixed together, the sheep recognize the shepherd’s voice and respond to none other when called. Rather than walking behind the sheep and using dogs and other animals to keep the flock together as done today, the shepherd walks in front of the sheep and leads them.
The first-century metaphor depicts Jesus as a protector of His followers by laying down His life for them and gathering them into a unique relationship with Himself and guiding them by leading the way.
The Good Shepherd is the leader who lays down his life for his sheep, his flock. He is the caring companion who protects them, whose voice they recognize and who provides pasture and life for them. Followers are thus offered a relationship of trust and safety because of the action of the shepherd.
The imagery also indicates the intimate and close relationship among the members of the flock, the Church. It strongly suggests that faith is lived in the context of community. Redemption is realized through the common efforts of the community which listens and recognizes the voice of the Shepherd. To paraphrase the gospels, we have to shepherd one another as Christ shepherds us. The world will know we belong to Christ our Shepherd by how we shepherd one another.
As we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday and the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, let us reflect on the words of St. Gregory the Great: “Ask yourself whether you belong to Jesus’ flock, whether you know Him, whether the light of His truth shines in your mind. I assure you that it is not by faith that you will come to know Him, but by love; not by mere conviction, but by action…”

45th Annual Hike For Life
Please join Fr. Edmund and Fr. Kelvin in support of the Calgary Pro-Life Association’s 10K Hike For Life at Prince’s Island Park on Saturday, May 8, 2025. You can join the St. Michael’s team, start collecting pledges and hike on your own, or you can make a donation to St. Michael’s Catholic Community (on behalf of Fr. Edmund and Fr. Kelvin) or any other team member from now until June 30th. All donations go directly to Pro-Life to support the Respect For Life programs. Together in Action (TIA)
Launched this Season of Lent, is the Diocese of Calgary’s annual campaign to support key ministries, partner organizations, and agencies. As Pilgrims of Hope in this Jubilee Year, we give as we “rejoice in hope, patient in suffering, persevering in prayer.” (Romans 12:12) The 2025 Together in Action campaign seeks to raise funds for essential initiatives, including care for retired priests, hospital chaplaincy, pastoral care, diocesan ministries, and the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund. This year’s goal is $121,243 which is the same as the previous few years. Thanks to your generosity, we reached the target amount last year. All surplus funds this year will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
Vocations Rally
The entire Diocese of Calgary is invited to join us for our second annual Vocations Rally here at St. Michael’s on Pentecost Sunday, June 8 from 11:00am-4:30pm. The Vocations Rally begins with the 11:00am Mass celebrated by Bishop McGrattan, followed by lunch, speakers, a panel, and much more! Admission and lunch are free, but registration is required.
