What you need to know from this weekend’s bulletin:

Branches of the Vine…

April 28, 2024

“I am the vine, you are the branches…” is a powerful analogy of our connectedness with Christ and with one another as the Mystical Body of Christ.
Christ, as our source of spiritual life in us, is pre-requisite to our communion with His Church. Separated from the vine, the branches wither and die. We die spiritually if we are separated from the source of our supernatural life. And true communion with one another ceases to exist.
“It means a steady immersion in the prayer of the Church. It means steady communion with God, speaking to Him on a regular basis. It means an immersion in the Scripture, soaking in the truth of the Bible. It means engaging in the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.” (Bishop Robert Baron)
A sense of communion with Christ goes hand in hand with our solidarity with our fellow believers in the faith.
This analogy of the vine and the branches requires a balance between our individuality and our belonging to the community. It means that we must participate in the life of the Church community through our common participation in the Sacraments, especially in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Our connectedness with the Church, the Sacrament of Christ, requires the spirit of Christ’s self-giving that enables us to sacrifice our individual preferences for the good of our community.
All our ministries are rooted in our faith in Christ, who is at the center of all our efforts as a community.
We all gravitate towards the Centre who is Christ. That is how we strengthen our sense of unity as a Church community. We lose our sense of unity with one another when we lose our connectedness with Christ.
May our ongoing efforts toward Eucharistic revival, especially our upcoming Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit and our Parish Renewal program, make us closer to Christ in the Eucharist, the source and summit of all our Christian life.
Healing Lines

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.”  (John 15:5)  As we enter the growing season in Calgary, let us be the branches of help to those who suffer from domestic violence, bullying, discrimination, and abuse. We can be the assistants for God to tend to those in need and aid them to become healthy and to bear fruit.

Volunteerism, Anyone?
“It was National Volunteer Week last week, and I would like to take a moment to acknowledge everyone for their ongoing dedication to St. Michael’s. Your hard work not only helps strengthen and build the community, but it also creates friendships and unforgettable moments. You are truly making a difference!” (Marvin Matthews, Volunteer Coordinator) We need volunteers in most ministries. The Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit (EME) Committee is actively campaigning for more volunteers. With the return of our Basket Collection during weekends, we need volunteers in the Hospitality Ministry to increase the number of ushers and greeters who can help with the collection baskets. With the lifting of restrictions of the Communion with the Cup and if we proceed the pre-pandemic practice, we require to double the number of Eucharistic Ministers who can help administer Holy Communion during the weekend Masses. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Marvin Matthews at mmatthews@saintmichael.ca
