Lent Begins This Week

The 40-day season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6, when we practice the personal and communal observance of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving in preparation for the joy of Easter.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the two days when Catholcis aged 18 to 59 are obligated to fast and abstain from meat, unless a physical condition prevents them to do so. Fasting is eating one meal a day and two smaller meals which, if combined together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Also, the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from eating meat for those aged 14 and older. Sundays are excluded from the Lenten fast and are not numbered in the traditional 40 days of Lent, as they are always considered “little Easters.” In keeping with the penitential spirit of Lent, the Sunday Masses during this season are subdued as we do not sing the Gloria and the Alleluia.

Visit saintmichael.ca/lent to see our Lent and Holy Week schedule.

Parishioners’ paintings and photography works will be on display in the mezzanine between Masses this weekend, beginning on Saturday after the 5 p.m. Mass, and until 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. All are invited to come and enjoy the display.
