We Ascend With Him

May 29, 2022

Christ’s ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus’ humanity into God’s heavenly domain, whence he will come again… Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father’s glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with him for ever.  Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church)

Jesus, who referred to Himself as the head and His followers as the body, was taken up to heaven and sat at the right hand of God. He was the same Jesus who compared His union with humanity to one living organism, calling Himself as the vine and His disciples as the branches.

As head of the one body to which we all belong, His ascension means that in a sense we have also been taken up to heaven. This has been His promise, that His followers would follow Him and that He would prepare a place for them.

The bars that we put in our windows to keep people out would have to be close enough that heads would not be able to be fitted in between those bars. Otherwise when a head can pass, the body can get through as well. Those who are familiar with the process of birth know that once the head of the newborn is through, the rest of the body will follow without further difficulty.

Let us remember that heaven is now our home, that we are heaven-bound by living our lives with the list of reminders He has provided his followers before finally joining His Father in glory.

As we commemorate the great commissioning He has given to His disciples to proclaim the Good News to all at the Ascension event, let us be more conscious of the same commissioning that is made at the end of  Mass as we are commissioned to “go in peace to love and serve the Lord.”

Healing Lines

“I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” Even in our darkest moments, God is with us. As in the poem by Mary Stevenson, “Footprints in the Sand”, at the times we cannot see God’s support He is quietly carrying us. For those of us who suffer the impacts of violence and abuse this can be of comfort. Let’s support God’s efforts by reaching out to those in need in our communities.
