Merry Christmas!

This weekend’s bulletin (December 21-22) will be the last print bulletin of 2019. From the clergy, staff, and volunteers at St. Michael’s, we want to take this opportunity to wish everyone in our parish community a very Merry Christmas! May you experience the love of Christ with family and friends during this joyful season.

Christmas Parking

Did you know that last year, close to six thousand people joined us at our Christmas Masses? For this reason, we want to remind you to be mindful of everyone’s safety with regard to parking:

  • Park only in designated stalls and not along fire lanes
  • The Knights will be directing parking during the 4 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass, so we strongly advise all those attending to follow their directions. Also, to ease congestion, please consider carpooling with family and friends!
  • Lastly, West 85th shopping mall (south of our church) has graciously allowed us an overflow parking area, which will be marked by orange pylons — please park only in these areas and not in front of restaurants and other businesses.

Christmas Hamper Program – New

A big thanks to everyone in our parish community for the support we received in completing our Christmas Hamper Program. Last Tuesday, we prepared and delivered 177 hampers. Thanks to all those who helped through the Angel Tree, food donations, monetary contributions, and to all our volunteers who enjoyed a day of fellowship and service. A special shout out goes to the parish schools: St. Michael School, St. Joan of Arc, Guardian Angels, and john Costello for their participation — our student volunteers were a big help!

Panhandling at Church

Every Christmas season, we’ve noticed the presence of people asking for money at the church entrances after Mass. We’d like to advise parishioners not to give them cash — instead, the SSVP have prepared bags containing non-perishable food items which you can grab from the alcove (beside the men’s washroom) for you to give. Also, refer them to our SSVP intake line (403-249-0423 ext. 122) so they can be provided with more substantial help. If they call, they are followed-up by the SSVP the following day.

Thank you for your donations – New

St. Michael’s is grateful for the financial support given by everyone in our parish community. As we approach the last few days of 2019, we humbly ask that you remember the parish for your year-end giving, and wish to remind you that we will issue tax receipts for all donations received by December 31. to donate, use the envelopes attached in this weekend’s bulletin or online at saintmichael.ca/giving.

This program is open to anyone 13+, especially teens and their families. When: Wednesdays, Jan. 22 to Feb. 26, 2020, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. • Cost: $20 for the study book. Conclude parish support for In His Will ministries

Since 2001, St Michael’s has financially supported the “In His Will (Belize)” Ministry through children’s donations at all masses. The funds collected were used to support a pre-school program, a computer lab, library, and a feeding program for students in Unitedville, Cayo, Belize. While a few parishioners were directly involved with the Ministry in its early years, there is currently little reporting or ongoing linkage between the parish and the McBride family, who is singularly responsible for initiating, maintaining, and ensuring the Ministry’s future.

In discussing the relevance of the “In His Will” program to the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Michael Catholic Community, the Parish Outreach subcommittee concluded that it is not aligned with the principles evolved by the committee to assess the value of outreach activities in our parish. It recommended that support for the program be concluded at the end of December. Fr John has informed the McBride family. We wish them the very best in their work with the In His Will Ministry.

The former monies will be reallocated to the community’s current Children’s Mission Collection beneficiaries: Chalice, Mission Mexico, and the Holy Childhood Association. For more information please contact the Parish Outreach subcommittee chair: Jeanne Besner outreach@saintmichael.ca.
