God’s Call to Renewal

“Duc in altum:” or “put out into the deep” can be a rallying cry for us in our current efforts towards renewal.
The commissioning of Peter as “fisher of men” speaks of Christ’s invitation to us, in spite of our inadequacies and failings, to seriously consider the ministry of proclaiming God’s message of renewal in our times. Like Peter, we hesitate and doubt about God’s call with its apparently daunting implications. Like Peter’s life, which radically changed when he let Jesus into his boat, we can invite God into our lives. Like Peter whose awareness of his inadequacy made him push Jesus away and refute His call, we can also hesitate to honor God’s invitation to share His life with us. Like Peter who was inspired by this experience to consent to Christ’s call to serve and lead, we need to realize in our life, that indeed, God calls us to ministry.
God’s invitation is a call to experience God’s personal friendship, making us more aware of God’s little miracles in our lives to convince us about the reality and seriousness of His call. Our response to God’s call may require us to undergo some purification to be ready and willing. It may take a miraculous catch of some sort to help us realize God’s serious intent. Our call to service and ministry is as real as Peter’s, and so are the risks.
The decision to “put out into the deep” requires a commitment to follow God’s will in our lives, even in the face of difficulties and challenges. We have to be affirmed by the faith we have in God and by the solidarity we have with those who share such faith. To “put out into the deep” requires our own self-surrender known as the obedience of faith that conquers all our fears.
Our efforts to respond to God’s call to put out into the deep should be in God’s terms, not in our own terms. We have to respond through the power and guidance of Spirit in solidarity with our respective faith communities. Our recognition of our own unworthiness and sinfulness leads us to the love and forgiveness that God bestows through the ministry of the faith community. As a community, we experience to Gods’ revelation of Himself in the Word that we proclaim with faith and commune with the person of Christ in the Eucharist.
Together in Christ, let us have the courage to “put out into the deep”, allowing ourselves to be transformed by the sacred mysteries that we celebrate as we gather in His holy name.

Healing Lines
As we are invited by Jesus to spread the Good News, so we are asked to look after those that we encounter in our daily lives. Those effected by bullying and abuse are especially in need of our help and love. Remember a time when you felt alone and helpless. Wouldn’t you have felt relieved to be given a kind word or some direction from those in your Church community? There may be someone sitting next to you right now who could use your reaching out to them.

2024 Tax Receipts
The 2024 tax receipts will be available for pick up from February 7 until February 16, 2025. They will be arranged alphabetically on a table in front of the main washrooms. After that date, the remaining tax receipts will be mailed.
2025 Contribution Envelopes
If you haven’t picked up next year’s 2025 contribution envelopes they are available for pickup in the office.
Art Walk 2025
We invite artists and photographers from beginners to professionals to register to showcase their works at the upcoming Art Walk 2025 on March 8 & 9, 2025. The cut off date to register is February 23, 2025. For more information, go on line to www.saintmichael.ca/events or pick up a form in the Narthex after Mass.
Pastoral Council
Pastoral Council wishes all parishioners a Happy New Year! We continued our work at our first meeting of the year on Tuesday, January 28.
Highlights of our meeting:
* The Eucharistic Adoration Ministry hopes to expand Eucharistic Adoration at Saint Michael.
* The Parish Renewal Team is looking forward to sharing highlights of the renewal survey.
* Watch for a “Tap to Give” machine soon to be installed in the Narthex.
