Moments of Self-Giving

March 13, 2022

The transfiguration was an awe-inspiring experience of God’s presence for Jesus and for His disciples. It was an incredible show of divine support, grace and inspiration at the time when Jesus faced the most trying period of His life: the decision to offer himself for our salvation through His own passion and death. The illumination of this experience would carry Him through the dark days of confusion, insecurity and terror that would come after this encounter with the Other. Jesus received the affirmation of His mission to give Himself up from the great figures of His tradition, representing the law and the prophets.
 
The transfiguration was one of those moments when Jesus took time out of His hectic ministry to go to a deserted place or a mountain to assess His relationship with His Father. It was of those breaks that proved to be a time for renewal of commitment to His Father to love and to serve. It was one of His times of prayer: to listen to God’s will in His life and to resolve to give rather than receive.   
 
All of us need some grace-filled memories or God-filled experiences to recall or return to, when faced with difficulty and challenge in our journey of faith. These graced-filled experiences or God-moments can inspire us and carry us through the darkness and difficulty of our trying periods of our journey. Our own stories of struggle in the faith can sustain us in our trials and tribulations. These God-moments may not approximate Christ’s transfiguration on a mountaintop but their significance can help us in efforts to do God’s will when we recognize and acknowledge it in our prayer and discernment. These moments are marked with self-giving and generosity that fulfill the deepest hunger of our soul.
 
All grace-filled memories or God-filled experiences are times when we realize giving ourselves to others in the spirit of self-sacrifice and true love. These are moments when we imitate God’s generosity and love which embody the essence of our personal commitment to Christ who gave himself up for our freedom from sin and death. Our struggling efforts to offer ourselves to God and others can be transformed into meaningful faith experiences by returning to our graced-filled memories when we experienced God’s love and presence in our lives.  
 
Our spirit of self-giving gives us a sense of fulfillment that is rooted in the gospel value of offering our life in order to gain it, to give in order to receive, to die to oneself in order to secure our eternal life. Our acts of sharing and giving are expressive of our personal commitment to Christ who shared and gave his own life for our salvation. Christ’s self-giving, which we celebrate in the Eucharistic sacrifice, is our blueprint for a life that is shared and broken for others. By sharing in Christ’s brokenness in the Eucharist, we can be transfigured and transformed into God’s holy people.

All are invited to a special Mass for St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday, March 19 at 8:30 a.m. in the Main Sanctuary.

Help support IWIN by purchasing raffle tickets (1 for $5 or 3 for $10). All proceeds go towards supporting survivors of human trafficking. 40 Days For Life Prayer Campaign

April 1

The Lenten campaign for 40 Days for Life has commenced and St. Michael is once again participating. 40 Days for Life is a peaceful prayer vigil held near the Kensington Abortion facility in Calgary as part of a world wide campaign of prayer for the unborn taking place during Lent. We encourage everyone to participate. If you’ve never done it before, we encourage you to join us this Lent in union with thousands of people around the world praying for an end to abortion. St. Michael’s assigned day is Friday, April 1. To sign up for a one hour time slot please go to www.40daysforlife.com/calgary and click on the box “Sign up for Vigil Hours”. Lenten Share Sunday – Palm Sunday

Weekend of April 2/3

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be having its first Share Sunday in over 2 years. Members of the Society will be distributing bags and food lists the weekend of April 2/3 to receive your Lenten offerings on Palm Sunday, April 9/10. May the kindness and compassion of your food and monetary donations stir the hearts of those who receive and fill them with hope. If you are providing from your home pantry, please check the Best Before date as we cannot use stale-dated items. Urgent Request: plastic bags for hamper packing.

 

Gift Shop

St. Michael’s Gift Shop is now open after all the Sunday Masses. Bibles, Rosaries, and gifts for Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. We are in need of volunteers. If you can spare some time after Mass, please contact Marvin at mmatthews@saintmichael.ca.

 

Columbarium Access

With the recent door control upgrade, we will be reissuing access cards. This will require us to order more cards and program them into the new system, and with many Columbarium clients, this will take some time. We estimate 2-4 weeks depending on the availability of cards from our vendor. In the meantime, as previously noted the Columbarium door will be unlocked from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily to allow for visiting. When all the cards are programmed and ready to distribute, we will make an announcement on Flocknote and in the bulletin. Thank you for your understanding and patience. 

Update, March 13: Access cards have been ordered, they will be programmed when we receive them. The new estimate is that cards will be ready by the end of March.

 

Society of St. Vincent de Paul 

Special thanks to all St. Michael parishioners for supporting the Society of St. Vincent de Paul!  During the month of February we helped 25 families (44 adults and 35 children). If you or anyone you know needs assistance, please contact us at SSVP@saintmichael.ca or 403-249-0423 ext 122.

We are looking for new members. If you are interested, contact us at SSVP@saintmichael.ca or 403-249-0423 ext 122. 

Donations of non-perishable food items can be dropped off in the SSVP food chest in the gathering area. Currently we are looking for: cereal, pasta sauce, canned vegetables and canned fish/meat.

Monetary donations can be deposited in the drop-box in the food chest or by online donations through the St. Michaels Parish website https://saintmichael.ca/giving/. Please indicate funds are for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the drop-down menu.
