The power and the presence
June 1, 2025
Forty days after Easter, witnesses saw Jesus taken up into heaven. Don’t just stand around looking at the sky! Jesus instructs those who love Him continue to witness, teaching all people the Gospel.
Christ’s ascension, which we celebrate today, deals with a reality that is beyond the physical and the earthly. In theology, Christ’s resurrection and ascension are referred to as two aspects of one reality. The ascension is the end of his physical appearances to His disciples and beginning of Christ’s spiritual presence among them. Where the physical ends, the spiritual somehow begins.
The spiritual represents a higher reality which can subsist on its own. The spiritual gives the physical its soul and significance. In death, the spiritual separates from the physical. In the resurrection and ascension, the spiritual, by its own power, reunites with physical for the fullness of human life in God.
Christ’s resurrection demonstrates His power and dominion over death itself, that is, the power of the spiritual over the physical. As Christ commissions His disciples to be witnesses, He gives them the assurance of His powerful presence through the Spirit.
Our Christian life is about a power and a presence that encompasses the physical and the earthly. The resurrection and ascension assert Christ’s power and presence among us as we are commissioned to bring His message to the world. Christianity is about the continuing presence of God in the Church and in the world. God’s presence is brought to the world through our life in the Spirit.
As we continue with our renewal efforts, we are commissioned to become more and more a living testament of a people who adheres to the power and presence of Christ’s resurrection and ascension.

Healing Lines
Faith communities can raise awareness of abuse and support violence-free family living by offering educational programs for men, women and children during the weekly routine of spiritual life. Holding abusive individuals accountable while offering hope for those desiring to change their violent behavior is another avenue of intervention by congregations. Faith communities need to be safe places to disclose abuse. Persons of faith who are abused often feel that their spirit has been broken, that God does not care about their life, that they are worthless in every way. Let us ensure we reach out in many ways to those among us who are abused or abusive.

SMCC Vacation Bible Camp 2025
Vacation Bible Camp 2025: “True North”

Potluck Sunday
The next Potluck Sunday for St. Michael Community will be on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at 6:00pm. This is a free event. Please bring a main dish, bread, salad, pickles, vegetable tray, or dessert ready to serve. This will be the last one until fall.
Face-to-Face Youth Night (Gr. 6-8)
The last Youth Night, with Face-to-Face Ministries, will be June 14. The Youth Night is for Grades 6-8 from 6:30-8:30pm. Pizza will be provided. This is a free event; no registration is needed.
40 Hours for Vocations
In collaboration with the Diocese of Calgary, St. Michael’s will be hosting 40 continuous hours of Eucharistic Adoration for vocations from Friday, June 6 at 3:00pm until Sunday, June 8 at 8:00am (note: there will be no Adoration during the 5:00pm Saturday Mass). Vocations Rally
The entire Diocese of Calgary is invited to join us for our second annual Vocations Rally here at St. Michael’s on Pentecost Sunday, June 8 from 11:00am-4:30pm. The Vocations Rally begins with the 11:00am Mass celebrated by Bishop McGrattan, followed by lunch, speakers, a panel, and much more! Admission and lunch are free, but registration is required. Parish Renewal
We are excited to share that the first draft of our Parish Renewal Plan is ready! Copies will be emailed to all Ministry Coordinators over the weekend. Copies will also be distributed to the parish via Flocknote and will also be available on the Parish Renewal website https://saintmichael.ca/parish-renewal/

If you haven’t received a copy and would like one, kindly email the office at info@saintmichael.ca or call 403-249-0423. Feedback and comments are welcomed at info@saintmichael.ca until June 6 to give the Parish Renewal Team time to complete the final draft and submit it to the Diocese of Calgary by the due date, June 15. Pastoral Council
Pastoral Council met for a final business meeting on Tuesday, May 20 before summer break. * Thank you to the dedicated men and women who have sat on council for the prescribed three-year term and who will be stepping down in June. Together in Action (TIA)
This year’s goal is $121,243 which is the same as the previous few years. Thanks to your generosity, we reached the target amount last year. All surplus funds this year will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
