The Theology of Anger
November 9, 2025
When Jesus cracked the whip in the temple, He did not exceed His authority for His hands were the hands of God’s Anointed. As such He was above human laws. When asked for sign to justify His action, He pointed to His resurrection to come. By His resurrection, He would prove Himself as Lord of all creation.
Anger is an emotion not easily understood. Feeling angry can be perceived as a weakness, even a sin. In many cultures, the ideal is to keep one’s cool and maintain one’s serenity. Isn’t anger listed as one of the deadly sins?
Yet, Jesus was often angry. We must conclude then that, in itself, anger is not a sin. It is a God-given human passion meant to resist, among others, threats and dangers, evil and injustice under any form. It does that without going beyond the limits of justice and charity, it is just anger, as was the anger of Jesus. Jesus does not use His improvised whip against persons, but only a crop to shoo away the animals. He achieves the very difficult balance of being nonviolently angry. In this respect, as in all others, He remains our model.
As St. Paul writes: “If you are angry, let it be without sin.” (Ephesians 4: 26). We can be angry without sin, if we know how to express our anger and at what objects it should be directed. We can even say that we must be angry at times. We must be angry at the attack against the weak and defenseless including the unborn, racism, political corruption and many other heinous crimes against humanity. Not to be angry at such outrages is not Christian forbearance but unchristian spinelessness.
Let us examine and reflect on our sense of anger. Do we understand that anger can be the just and appropriate response to a given situation? Are we angry at sin itself and its harmful consequences or are we angry at persons who deserve our love and respect? How do we express our anger constructively or nonviolently?
Healing Lines
Biblical misconceptions about abuse… “Abuse is my cross to bear.” Jesus chose His cross, and He bore it for our sake. A woman does not choose to be abused, and no one is “helped” in any way by her being abused. “The Bible says I have to submit to my husband. (Eph. 5:22)” Reading the whole passage (Eph. 5:21-33), we see that wives and husbands must submit to each other equally, and that husbands must treat their wives with love and respect (Eph. 5:33). “The Bible says I have to forgive my abuser. (Mt. 6:9-15)” Forgiveness is not permission to repeat the offence, nor does it mean that we must expose ourselves to danger. Rather, it allows us to let go of a bad experience and move on with our lives, in recognition that we do not need to tolerate abuse against ourselves, or others.

Pastoral Council
A Pastoral Council meeting was held on Tuesday, October 28. In keeping with an action item identified in the Parish Renewal Plan, the meeting started with Conversation in the Spirit, a prayerful reflection of the upcoming Sunday Gospel. Several agenda items were discussed, including ideas to start a youth program at SMCC, heating in the Sanctuary, and the upcoming Diocesan Advent Renewal Retreat on December 6. Fall Fundraiser
We are launching a parish-wide fundraising sale of high-quality protein products to help support our increasing needs as a community as we continue to witness God’s love and compassion in our midst. With any purchase, you contribute to our Church’s finances while enjoying some delicious food over the Advent and Christmas period. There are over 60 products to choose from! Elevation Youth Group (Gr. 4-6)
Youths in Grade 4-6 are invited to join our brand new youth group: ELEVATION youth! Join us on Fridays from 6:30-8:30pm in the St. Nicholas room for devotions, snacks, games, faith, and fun! The program will start on November 7, with the final schedule coming out shortly, and will run until the spring. Pre-registration is required and capacity is dependent on volunteer availability. Christmas Hampers
November marks the start of major preparations for our annual Christmas Hamper Campaign. Known as a community of outreach where all are welcomed, there is no greater sign of our welcome than the delivery of a hamper to those in need. We are now accepting referrals for Christmas Hampers for those in our parish. Please call 825-417-1720 if you are in need. In the face of mounting costs and increased demand, once again, we are counting on the generosity of our parish community to provide for this annual outreach. Volunteer sign up will take place the last two weekends in November. In the meantime, please donate: * take an envelope marked for Christmas Hampers and place in the collection box, * online at this link, or * via the QR code in the bulletin. Elevator Upgrade
An elevator upgrade work will be underway for two weeks (November 10-21). The elevator will be taken out of service for the entire time. Saturday Night Lights
Youth Event Update from Access 52: Saturday Night Lights was a great success! Over 85 students attended representing 27 different schools. Thank you to all volunteers, church staff, and clergy for your support. Next event Grades 7-12: November 29. Doors open at 7pm.
Youths in grades 7-12 are invited to an evening of music, food, friendships, and talks hosted by Access 52. Dates for the evenings are November 29, January 10, February 14, and April 25. This is a free event. Together in Action (TIA)
This year’s goal is $121,243 and currently, we have reached 73% of this target amount. Thanks to your generosity, we reached this target amount last year. All surplus funds will go to our Building Fund to help pay our loan.
